Breast Cancer: A Review of Chlorine-Related Research
Breast cancer remains one of the most complex and serious women's health issues facing us today. A great deal remains unknown as to the causes, contributing factors and treatments of the disease. While we still have more questions than answers, a great deal of research is being conducted by the public and private sectors to identify ways to reduce incidence rates and develop a cure.
In search for ways to prevent breast cancer, some scientists and advocates have raised questions about possible environmental links, including hypotheses about exposure to some chemicals that contain chlorine. The questions raised are important and deserve -- and are receiving -- investigation.
In order to promote a better understanding of the issue, the Chlorine Chemistry Council (CCC) has prepared the attached materials reviewing research available from the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, the American Academy of Sciences and others. These materials consist of a:
- White paper reviewing current research on breast cancer, trends in incidence rates, known risk factors, and related topics.
- Executive summary of the white paper's key findings.
- Compilation of quotes from selected scientists and medical researchers speaking on the issue.
The Chlorine Chemistry Council encourages a review of the full weight of scientific evidence when making decisions about health risks. We continue to support research investigating the effects of chlorine chemistry on breast cancer and other health issues. For further information, please contact the CCC at 703-741-5827.
